April Update

I hope that all of you had a wonderful Good Friday and Easter. So much has happened over the last few weeks that it’s tough to know where to start.

The most exciting news to share is that I’m already in the fifth week of my English classes. I have fourteen enthusiastic university students who have quickly formed into a dynamic community of learners. There are two classes per week along with time spent in smaller groups in the café. While the classroom sessions are geared a bit more toward instruction and group work, the café sessions emphasize sharing activities in English so that they can get to know each other better.

Already I am witnessing the Lord moving in promising ways. On the second day of class I shared John 3:16 with my students and explained its significance in my life. One student has already been invited to a local church and another student inquired about our Christ-centered counseling here at El Alfarero. Other students have opened up a little about the struggles they face in life: from relationships to loneliness to financial concerns. Please pray that I can continue to point to Christ in my actions and words and that my English classes would continue to be an avenue to knowing Jesus Christ.

I recently participated in a large scale Evangelism Exposition. This all-day activity united several ministries throughout Santa Cruz de la Sierra. We met in the El Alfarero building for workshops in the morning and then traveled downtown to the main plaza to share the gospel through songs, dance, theater, prayer groups, and other outreach activities. I teamed up with a fellow Bolivian to use a picture activity to share the gospel with young adults.

Using a “Soularium” (a set of pictures) to invite people to share about their lives and their relationship with God. It’s an enjoyable low-key activity that gets people to open up quite quickly, offering a unique opportunity to share Christ.

On Good Friday I also had the opportunity to spend time with my Bolivian family with whom I used to live until I moved into my own apartment earlier this year. This reunion included Graciela Spence (far right) who was visiting from the U.S. She and her husband, Todd, attend Calvary Community Church in Westlake, California. They are the ones who introduced me to El Alfarero.

Praises:
~ I am thankful for how the Lord has used the English classes as an instrument to make His name known.
~ Praise God for a successful outreach to the main plaza.
~ Praise God that my Dad has been recovering quite quickly from his heart attack. He’s already back at work!

Requests:
~ That God would continue to be glorified through the English classes.
~ In a few weeks I will be advertising another English class. Please pray for wisdom and discernment in finding new students.
~ I will be leading an evangelism team that will visit a local university once per week to share the gospel and pray for students. Please pray for courage and a contagious joy.

  1. Hey Derek!

That’s so cool that you used the Soularium tool for evangelism. I like using it to get people to open up a little more and have a joint dialogue instead of just sharing the gospel with people without real engagement. I’m glad your students are both eager to learn English but also about the Lord. I’m also glad your Dad is doing better. Yes, praying for contagious joy! It is great that God is showing you fruit already and that you are in a good group of people.

My niece was born on Friday, so now just trying to figure out my next assignment and plan for a visit to Bogota.

    Praying for you today!

    Blessings, Eve

    • Wow! Thanks for the prayers and I’m so happy for you and your family with the arrival of your niece. God is good! I’m glad to hear that you too have used the Soularium and that it has opened doors for conversation and sharing.
